As today's outdoor enthusiasts debate over what makes a good survival knife, centuries ago, Japanese master smiths had already crafted their answer – the Kennata(劍鉈刀).
(image 01: A typical Japanese traditional Kennata)
In ancient Japan, commoners were forbidden from carrying pointed knives, as they were considered weapons. Hunters had to rely on flat-tipped, straight-edged, thick-backed waist knives which was called Koshinata(腰鉈刀). While these knives were highly regarded for its superior chopping ability, the constant threat of bears, wolves, and other wild animals in the forest posed a significant danger to the hunters' survival, forcing them to seek more suitable tools for forest survival from the master smiths.
The challenges faced by the master smiths at that time were enormous: On one hand, Japan's resources were extremely scarce, and materials for knife making were very limited. They had to innovate their techniques to maximize the performance of these materials. On the other hand, impoverished hunters could only afford a single knife, so the smiths needed to craft a durable and multi-functional outdoor knife to withstand the harsh and brutal challenges of the wilderness and forests.
Ultimately, after enduring countless lessons of blood and tears, the skilled Japanese master smiths, through generations of technical improvements and unwavering pursuit of quality, brought the Kennata to the hunters. Its outstanding performance and pointed design significantly enhanced the hunters' survival capabilities in the outdoors. From that time onwards, the Kennata became an essential tool for countless Japanese hunters venturing into the forests, a trusted companion they were willing to entrust with their lives, up to the present day.
Today, KATSU KNIVES honors the legacy of Japanese craftsmanship and respect for nature by incorporating modern materials into this time-tested design. That is KATSU FB03. This knife is designed for adventurers who dream of conquering the wilderness. Whether trekking through dense forests, scaling rocky mountainsides, or navigating muddy trails, KATSU KNIVES FB03 remains steadfast and reliable, ready to assist you in any situation.
6.9-Inch (175mm) Blade Length: Offers efficient chopping capabilities. The 0.22-inch (5.5mm) thick blade balances strength and weight, allowing you to tackle high-intensity bushcraft and chopping tasks with ease and confidence.
Clip Point Blade: The sharp clip point enhances piercing and cutting capabilities, making it effective for both defense against wild animals and processing game.
Curved Spine and Handle Design: The continuous inward curve from the spine to the handle provides not just a visually pleasing appearance but also practical benefits. The inward curve focuses impact force on the blade edge, significantly enhancing chopping efficiency. It also improves blade direction control during swings, making cuts more accurate, and increases the blade's strength by widening its narrowest point, helping to absorb and cushion impacts.
Finger Choil: The choil near the blade's base allows for precise control during detailed cutting tasks, bringing your hand closer to the edge for better leverage.
Flat Saber Grind: This grind retains more material for blade strength and is easier to sharpen in outdoor conditions.
Ergonomic Handle: The inward curved handle, narrowing near the index finger and widening at the end, follows the classic Kennata design. It provides excellent grip and stability. Made from durable, lightweight, and moisture-resistant G10 material, the handle ensures a secure hold even in wet conditions.
Adjustable K-Sheath: The adjustable K-Sheath can be carried both vertically and horizontally, offering lightweight and flexible options to keep your KATSU FB03 securely and conveniently by your side at all times.
